This awards funds a proposal to bring speakers to campus to cover the question of "what makes a sustainable city?," covering the key areas of energy, water, transportation, the built environment (including affordable housing and shared public spaces), and the digital city & sharing economy (social and economic transformations engendered by digital communications).

Trump & the Media - Do Words Matter: Journalism, Communication & Alternative Truth

A day-long series of events assembling academics and media notables from diverse backgrounds in profession, identity, and perspectives to discuss the value of information and the effectiveness of communication during the Trump era. The first panel focused on the 2016 Campaign and Media, and questioned the expectations and predictions media made in contrast to actual election results.

Flash Point 2017: Twenty-Five Years After the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising

A three-day event utilizing art and media to examine the socio-political factors that provoked the 1992 LA Uprising and its impact on the racial and economic climate in LA and across the US today. Events will include panels featuring a discussion of the evolution of community organizing as well as the role media, particularly film, has played in creating and reflecting social change. There will be a gallery displaying avariety of art inspired by the Uprising and a follow-up discussion with the artists.

Bioeconomy and Deep Decarbonization: Lessons for the Future from a Decade of Biofuel Policies

A one-day workshop convening a group of experts to consider three topics: the broad question of the optimal use of land to meet deep decarbonization targets; the focused question of aviation and heavy-duty transportation sector, where many analysts foresee especially pressing need for low carbon liquid fuels; and to reflect on lessons learned from the last decade of experience with indirect land use change in biofuel policies—such as the competition between using lands used for carbon sequestration for production of food, fiber, and biofuels.
