Creating an Engine of Innovation and Economic Growth for Southern California and Beyond

UCLA Research Park advances the University's mission to drive discovery and exploration by converting a former iconic Los Angeles shopping center into a state-of-the-art research and innovation hub, designed to support transformative, multidisciplinary, collaborative scientific research and academic inquiry.

Acquired by UCLA in December 2023, the property encompasses more than 1.3 million gross square feet on 9.2 acres and includes two buildings connected by an enclosed pedestrian bridge across Westwood Boulevard. Located less than two miles from the main campus in Westwood, UCLA Research Park aims to bring together scholars and industry experts from around the world, benefiting Southern California and beyond. It will be planned and developed in stages, beginning with Research Park East.

Initial occupants of Research Park East will include the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy (CIII), the UCLA Quantum Innovation Hub, and research space for UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Space in Research Park East will include collaborative areas for research and creative activities; startup company incubator spaces and makerspace; offices and associated amenities to support researchers; as well as outdoor terraces and gathering areas.

Research Park West, where a 12-screen movie theater was previously located, will be developed in a later phase. Research Park West may include additional laboratories, and some of the theaters may be repurposed for use as auditoriums and gathering spaces for seminars, performances, or small conferences.

Collectively, the development of UCLA Research Park will support UCLA’s Strategic Plan Goal 3 to enhance research and creative activities, as well as the University’s Research and Innovation Compact, a plan to create a more integrated and collaborative innovation ecosystem across Southern California. By deepening engagement with the scientific industry and building philanthropic partnerships, UCLA aims to support the development of intellectual property, accelerate technology transfer, and expand industry-sponsored research.

UCLA Research Park will cement California’s global economic, scientific, and technological dominance into the 22nd century, and beyond.
