HOW WE CAN HELP

The Research Concierge Program supports faculty by coordinating their onboarding and relocation with the hiring department and other existing campus programs. Through these efforts we seek to limit wasted time and funding, improve faculty satisfaction, and support the continuous improvement of faculty support programs across campus. Based on departmental structure, RCP can provide support in these areas:

Life Transition

  • Coordinating household move
  • Housing assistance and resources
  • Grade schools and daycares

Research/Lab Transition

  • Coordinating lab and/or office moves
  • Engaging parties to renovate UCLA space(s)
  • Space setup for research and creative activities
  • Facilitating quotes and purchases for equipment, supplies and/or furnishings

Other Areas

  • Connecting resources for IT (department and campus)
  • Navigating the department/UCLA hiring process
  • Advising on grant transfer process
  • MTAs and IPs

HOW WE GOT HERE

The concept for the Research Concierge program was first initiated at Vice Chancellor Michael Beck’s Administration Department’s five-year strategic planning meeting. The Environment, Health & Safety program tested the concept by launching an initial small-scale version as the Portal program which focused on onboarding faculty into the campus safety programs. With enthusiastic support from the School of Medicine, this program was expanded and first named the Research Concierge Program. Continued success of the concept led to a larger vision of the program being presented to Administration’s Leadership 2027 management training program where a work group developed the idea as their management training project into a comprehensive formal program which they successfully pitched to executive management. The Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation & Creative Activities, Dr. Wakimoto; Vice Chancellor of Academic Personnel, Dr. Levine; and the Vice Chancellor of Administration, Michael Beck, jointly funded the program as a two-year pilot and Laura Benscoter-Urquidez was hired as the program’s Director. After the success of its first year, it was advanced to full program status by the provost, Dr. Emily Carter, and placed under the oversight of the Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation & Creative Activities. It started as a formal program July 1st, 2020.
